THEORETICAL APPROACH TO COUNSELING
I use an eclectic approach to counseling, but rooted in person-centered counseling. Carl Roger’s person-centered counseling techniques are used to focus on the uniqueness of the client/student. The emphasis of person-centered counseling is to help the client/student to focus on the “here and now”. Empathy, self-disclosure, open-ended questions and statements are techniques used to help the client /student to resolve unfinished business from the past. For a more difficult client/student who demonstrates a lack of verbal interactions, techniques of Fritz Pearls’ Gestalt theory are used to help the client/student to fine their inner being and the importance of wholeness in their life. Exercises and experiments, role playing, counselor and client/student interaction, and “I take responsibility” messages are used to help the client/student to make positive changes in their life. These techniques also help the client/student to focus on the “here and now”. Cognitive-behavioral therapy using the Cognitive Model of Emotional Response is also used to reinforce-positive/negative continuous shaping, and homework assignments help the client/student to reach their goals.
